Launching into the New Millenium
Looking for ideas about how to engage your members? This new on-line resource is available at the Ohio 4-H Website. Developed by Extension professionals at The Ohio State University, this notebook is arranged in "Countdown Chapters." Each chapter focuses on a specific subject matter area in the 4-H program with activity sheets that are designed to use with 4-H club members.
The Countdown Chapters include:
Each worksheet includes objectives and instructions as well as an answer sheet, so advisors do not have to be "experts" to guide members through the activity.
But these activities are designed to teach a lot more than subject matter information. Learning to make decisions, work together, and communicate effectively, to name just a few.
An advisor may choose to use the activites in many ways.
For example:
- members can be asked to choose from several and complete individually.
- members could work in pairs or teams. Members could choose their own teammate, or they could be matched up in any number of ways:
- Random order to help members to get to know each other better.
- Older members with younger members in a mentoring role.
- More experienced members with less experienced members (in an informational sharing role.
- Groups of youth could be teamed to create a cooperative learning environment.
- a member could be asked to select an activity and instruct other club members on how to complete it.
